The robot is based on the Moroccan flic-flac spider, which can walk like other spiders. It can also propel itself into the air, with a combined sequence of somersaulting and rolling on the ground. It is twice as fast in so-called rolling mode than when walking.
The BionicWheelBot has eight legs, enabling it to both walk and roll. They are controlled by a total of 15 small motors, which fit in the knee joints and body. There are also 14 automatic-locking worm gear units that ensure that the spider only has to use energy when moving its legs – not, however, to keep its body upright when standing still.
In rolling mode, the BionicWheelBot does a somersault with its whole body, just like the real flic-flac spider. The robot has an inertial sensor, therefor it always knows what position it is in and when it has to push off again. It is therefore much faster when rolling than walking and can even overcome inclines of up to five per cent uphill.
The BionicWheelBot propels itself with a tripod gait; the artificial spider uses six of its eight legs to walk, leaving the two so-called push-off legs folded up. For every step, three legs remain on the ground, whilst the other three are lifted, moved forward and then put back down on the ground.
With the same sequence, the BionicWheelBot then moves the other three legs forward that were just on the ground.
In order for the artificial spider to move its long legs quickly and efficiently, the drives must apply comparatively high forces. They are supported by a spring mechanism for this.
A spring is fitted in every knee and shoulder joint, which is preloaded when the relevant leg is lifted. The force temporarily stored at this time then supports the corresponding motor in the countermovement when lifting the body.

A path planning algorithm plans footsteps across the planar regions to a goal location, specified by an operator. The robot is currently about 50% successful over this type of terrain.

The HDMS includes dual robotic manipulator arms and a moveable humanoid torso that can be easily mounted onto a robotic platform to efficiently conduct a variety of missions, including explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) operations, manufacturing, healthcare, and others.
It’s  designed specifically for mobile systems, and is extremely flexible and configurable. The HDMS is available in multiple dexterity configurations, including, but not limited to 11, 15 or 16 degrees-of-freedom (DoF). The system’s ability to mimic human interaction provides numerous benefits for military, civilian and  industrial usage.
Tele-operated control is achieved using Imitative Controller technology. Traditional controller methods (i.e. dials/switches, gaming controllers, etc.) are not practical for effectively and efficiently controlling highly dexterous manipulator arms, especially dual-arm systems. The Imitative Controller provides highly intuitive control of dexterous dual-arm manipulation systems. The two-arm robot can pull items apart, remove the cap from a bottle, lift heavier weights with two arms, and brace itself with one arm while performing tasks with the other —even under harsh conditions.

A series of tests demonstrate how it can cut diagonally down through rolled up reed matting, slice upwards through delicate rose petals and slash horizontally through oranges.
However, while Mr Machii slices through just one orange, the Motorman robot dispatches six oranges at once.

By pushing and pulling together, the artificial ants move an object across a defined area. Thanks to this intelligent division of work, they are able to efficiently transport loads that a single ant could not move.

After the second SpotMini pulls the door slightly ajar, it hooks one foot behind it, holding it open while it moves to the side to provide more room to swing it the whole way. When the first SpotMini arrives at the door, the robot – which has no neck but an array of sensors placed where its shoulders would be – leans back to peer at the doorhandle in a movement more fitting for a kennel than a robotics firm. .
